We headed into town for the annual Canada Day parade this morning. The first event of the day was a Dog Agility Course sponsored by It's A Dog's Life (our version of a humane society). We all sat on the curb and watched the local dogs gather and visit while their people did the same. We wished that we had brought our dog with us to join in. We watched the dogs and were encouraged by their behaviour that we have a great, normal dog. We chatted with other dog owners about our pets.
One of the organizers very kindly asked Fi if she wanted to try the agility course if there was an extra dog. She did. She had fun doing it and was kind enough to ask for an extra prize for her brother since he was too small to guide a dog through the course.
I sat and reflected how lovely a small town can be.
The street was filled with people who take time to be with their dogs and their kids. This was no fancy speed-course. Every kid-handler and dog racer was encouraged through the course with words and applause. Every kid who wanted to participate was lent to dog to do so with. Even the puppies who were too shy to participate were encouraged. And there were prizes for everyone.
It was a taste of the best that Canada has to offer in small-town life.
